Reason #64: Random Run-Ins

I am happy to announce that there are more than 63 reasons to live well! One Gillian Reasons is back...

I was sitting at my desk today, providing some clients with some negative feedback, when I realized I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Oncologists, I feel for you. Human resource managers who give the pink slips, I feel for you. New reporters who inform the public of the wars, the crime, the bad economy, I feel for you.

Few jobs have the ability to provide good news all the time, and I certainly am not qualified to be an ice cream truck driver or Lotto Announcer. However, my hobby of blogging has the ability to write about whatever I want.

So here we go, I am going to start documenting all the wonderful things in life I experience daily. Today I can credit random run-ins as a reason we all live well.

RANDOM RUN-IN

There is something magical about running into someone unexpectedly. It is a sudden palpitating rush of joy-shock adrenaline. ..."Is that her? Could it be? Nooo, we could not possibly be at the same place...but yes, it is!" Combined with an outpour of laughter, disbelief, and endorphins.

Today on my way to Bryant Park to meet a friend for lunch, I walked straight into my best friend from college. Emily was visiting from Virginia for work and happened to be walking to a client meeting at the exact time I was entering the park. At the moment I saw this skinny girl with a huge smile, I was grinning from ear to ear and embracing my best friend. What crazy and wonderful timing!

Back when I was a child, my parents decided to go on a family roadtrip, so we all packed into the gray station wagon. Dad was driving, Mom was in the passenger seat, and I was stuck in the middle of the backseat between my sisters, Devon and Heather. While driving on the highway, all of a sudden, my 8 year old sister Devon announces, "hey, isn't that Grandma?" She points to the moving car next to us. Sure enough, there was Grandma riding in a car with a group of nuns on the NJ Turnpike. What crazy and wonderful timing! (Side note: Grandma was not a nun. Just a good, kind-hearted woman who had a variety of friends.)

During college, I went on vacation with my Californian friend, Dustin to Cabo San Lucas. After a day at the beach, we visited the market in search of souveneirs. I entered an art gallery and upon viewing a collection of paintings, I recognized a familiar voice. An old friend? Grandpa? A past flame? Nope, just Leonardo DiCaprio. For a few moments, Leo and I (and ahem, Bar Refaili) gazed at the same piece of art. Pretty sure I overhead him whisper to me, "never let go," but that may have been a result of the joy-shock adrenaline. What crazy and wonderful timing!

Nonetheless, random run-ins are a joyous moment and a sudden burst of excitement worth appreciating in life. Just another reason to live well.

Life is exciting. What's next?

  3. Ahh - I'm famous! By far it was the most wonderful moment of my trip. And exactly as you described - a big outpouring of laughter, hugs, and love. Made me miss you the rest of the walk down the sidewalk and want to run back.
