Reason #52: New York City Marathon Lottery

Did you sign up for the New York City Marathon through the lottery? If so, tomorrow is the day you can find out if you were chosen. The New York Road Runners held the drawing today, and applicants can check their status online on Thursday at noon to see if they are in or out. All applicants will also be notified via email on Friday.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the New York City Marathon. For the second consecutive year, the marathon has attracted more than 100,000 applicants for the five-borough race on November 1. Apparently, you have to be real lucky to win a lottery slot. In 2008, 57,000 people entered the lottery, but only 5,600 were accepted. Once again, New York proves to be an ultra-competitive city. New York Times writer Liz Robbins says, "I always joke that it's easier to get into Harvard than the New York City Marathon." However, this year will be the largest group of runners to date closing at approximately 50,000 participants. Perhaps the increased size of the race could mean an increase in the odds of entry via the marathon lottery?

Im crossing my fingers. I will let you know the results tomorrow!

  2. This is my 3rd year in the lottery. I am actually hoping I do not get in this year (vacation). So I will automatically be in next year. If I get in this year I can pay this year and defer to next year (of course NYC makes me pay twice).
